Like everything in a first draft, I'm not sure this will make the final cut, but for now I think it's a good way to describe my female main character's current state of mind: The only thing that kept her from sliding into sheer mindless terror was thinking about how inconvenient it all was.

I love lines like that... Makes a tense moment (that's what I'm thinking that is) into an 'lol'. You're all prepared for suspense, eyes wide, scared, and then you burst out laughing. That's a mark of a good writer, being able to make someone laugh when it's not a laughing moment...

Thanks! Sometimes that's how life is, you have to laugh to keep from crying. Yes, it's very tense - her husband is probably going to be executed. You either find something else to think about or you go insane. And she can't afford to go insane because she has a newborn baby to take care of.
