So, what is this place anyway, and why is it here?
The Worlds Apart Writers' Hangout is intended to be a friendly community of people who love writing for the sake of writing. It's about writing for the fun and joy of it, writing because we all have stories to tell, and (as prysmakitty puts it) "that sheer exhilaration when you're lost in it and the *need* to get the story out of your head." The WAWH is a place where we can come to nurture and strengthen our sometimes-fragile self-identity as writers, to just have fun with the process instead of worrying about if someone else thinks we're "good enough." It's a place where you can come to find encouragement with your personal writing goals, where people understand that yes, characters do have minds of their own and there's no point in trying to make them do something they don't want to do, and to have fun with the whole amazing process of telling your stories.
We're mainly geared towards writers of fantasy/science fiction/imaginative fiction, as well as *serious* writers of fantasy/science fiction-oriented fanfiction. ("serious" as opposed to drabbles, songfics, and "OMG they'd be so HAWT together i think i'll write a fanfic!! squeee!!!!") Writers in other fiction genres are welcome as long as you remember to be nice to the geeks.
If you're a visual artist, feel free to also join us to post about your works in progress, your to-do list, and the highs and lows of your creative process.
What this forum isn't: It isn't about getting published. If you have a goal to become commercially published, that's wonderful and we wish you good luck. There are plenty of places on the Web where you can get guidance and advice to help you. Writers who have been published or who want to get published someday are welcome to join us; just remember that we're not here to angst about agents and submissions and what will sell!
If you're self-publishing (the route I've decided to pursue), no worrying about pricing and marketing and stuff.
Also, we aren't about critiques. There are plenty of sites on the web where you can get critiqued, and critique other writers. There's one section here where you can post your writing difficulties in order to get help and suggestions, and one where you can post looking for a critique buddy or beta reader. All critiquing, however, must be done off-site. What we're doing here is just having fun talking about writing and our projects.
Finally, the Worlds Apart Writers' Hangout is not a place to post your full-length works. I've tried reading fiction on message boards, and can't stand it. Short stories and vignettes are welcome as long as they fit in one post/comment (limit 60,000 characters). For longer or multi-chapter works, get a blog or a free website from Angelfire or Tripod, then post a link here so we know where to find you.
Oh, and why "Worlds Apart"? Because that's the name of my fiction website. It sounds good for a fantasy/science fiction group. ;D
Welcome, and enjoy your stay.
*note* Posts in the Writing Life section are open for guests to read so you can get an good idea of what goes on here.
